Much like an actual condom, a group of developers in int3.cc have invented a condom-like sleeve which prevents any possibility of transferring of data. The add-on was put on sale and now currently its out of stock, but it does seem to do the job- protect from ‘juice jacking’.
This was made necessary as charging stations in public areas, airports and even venues can be used as an easy way to access people’s devices and unknowingly affecting their USB devices with malware to steal information during charging. The sleeve lets you charge the phone, but it blocks the pins responsible for data transfer, thereby protecting your phone from any possibility of data transfer.
This came into light when Georgia Tech showed that a fake apple charger can be used to take over a phone as it installs an app for data mining. This malicious softwares still accesses and controls your phone even after disconnecting the device from the charger. Seeing that this potential risk is something that can be pulled off easily, something was required to protect the users who will depend on such charging stations, but also need to protect their phone.
The protection sleeve is made for standard, Micro and mini USB connectors, but as of now they’re all out of stock until tomorrow.
