About the Barracuda Pro HDD Lineups…

The BarraCuda Pro lineups of mechanical HDDs cater to home to prosumer usage, with two-year data recovery cover and a 5-year warranty. Seagate states the following are BarraCuda Pro’s best use case:

  • Desktop or all-in-one PCs
  • Home servers
  • Creative pros systems
  • Entry-level direct-attached storage devices (DAS)

About these DAS units…

Aftermarket DAS is a market not many are picking up, yet. But it does make sense to have such HDDs for such purpose. The Barracuda Pro drives are 7,200 RPM spindle drives with up to 256 MB Cache depending on the capacity and max transfer rate up to 220 MB/s and rated power consumption of 6.8 watts on any of its Barracuda Pro HDDs.

Provided recovery program woes

Seagate’s included recovery coverage is dependent on the service agency. This issue also applies on WD as they couldn’t confirm this support for its Red Pro NAS HDDs. It doesn’t absolve either of them since the pricing of this is included with the drive. Irrespective of the manufacturer, if it is an advertised feature and sold locally, it has to provide that official support.

What I am reviewing is the Seagate BarraCuda Pro ST14000DM001 HDD, a 14 TB drive which has a spindle of eight discs and 256MB buffer. This is the largest storage capacity drive you can get your hands on.

These mechanical HDD weights are very relevant now since newer PC cases with HDD/SSD cages are either concealed, usually hidden away in a corner or behind the motherboard tray with little to no direct active airflow. The Seagate BarraCuda Pro 14TB is rated to weigh at 690 grams. Those vertical clamps need to be strong. Unfortunately, some PC makers may oversee this.

Internal Sub-Components

The Seagate BarraCuda Pro 14 TB ST14000DM001 HDD uses a cache from Nanya. I cannot find out the controller and motor controller’s make since the thermal pads are tightly pressed and usually tears around its IHS when removed.

The system that I am using is to test most of the hardware. The same operating system, choice of SATA III port (SATA_1), version of the benchmark software and the testing method is maintained throughout the graph.

Transfer Test

AS SSD Benchmark

Test the sequential or random read/write performance without using the cache. AS SSD Benchmark reads/writes a 1 GByte file as well as randomly chosen 4K blocks. Additionally, it performs the tests using 1 or 64 threads and it determines the SSD’s access time.

Two extra benchmark tests examine the drive’s behaviour when (1) copying a few big files, a lot of small files and a mixture of file sizes by using cached copy functions of your OS as well as (2) reading/writing data depending on the data’s compressibility.

Unlike synthetic storage tests, the PCMark 8 Storage benchmark highlights real-world performance differences between storage devices.

About temperature and power…

With an ambient in case temperature of 32 degrees Celsius, the Barracuda Pro 14 TB HDD operates between 35 degrees to 40 degrees Celsius idle and load. That’s usually the case with mechanical HDDs in a PC case under such conditions.  This is the largest capacity storage drive any of the two mechanical HDD makes, with 12 TB being around for a while. The power consumption also needs to be low its opted for DAS. A DAS unit which takes power from the USB 3.0 Gen 2 without additional power plug for up to 14TB could be tempting. But it largely depends on DAS makers. At 6.9-watt, this is a very energy efficient hard drive. The 12 TB BarraCuda Pro ST12000DM0007 HDD operates at the same operational power consumption.

Storage Vs. Price

The performance of these drives is where you expect them to be- around 10 TB and 12 TB variants. You’ll be buying this more for the maximum possible storage capacity in a single HDD and the provided recovery program. The AMAZON pricing is $549.99 while the 12 TB Barracuda Pro variant costs $429.98. The additional 2 TB costs US$ 120. As it turns out, a 2TB Barracuda Pro does cost US$ 120. If you’re seeing the value of this HDD only within the BarraCuda Pro lineups, that’s a very good value for money. 

The use case is obvious- to provide mass storage for desktop users in a 3.5″ HDD frame. The gaming PC users wouldn’t really look anything beyond 1-2 TB for storage purpose and have 512 GB to 1 TB SATA SSDs to run games from. Load times matter more, for now. But for those who store a lot of data and want to run from the source, that’s a different situation.
