I have received the WD Black WD2002FAEX to review. Last time when I reviewed the WD Red series, it made a good impression especially when it comes to temperatures during load. It makes a lot more sense to go for such drives when you’re considering RAID 0 configurations, although I am hoping to upgrade a more suitable test bench once Haswell/ Newer gen Ivy Bridge comes up, especially keep RAID 0 testing in mind.
Then I’ve tested the 1TB Velociraptor which made a good impression, although its older 600GB counterpart did have the lowest boot load times compared to ALL of the mechanical drives. But where do blue and black series fit? Especially when Mechanical drives are something that is now would be considered to be used as a secondary storage as more and more people doing the right thing by having an SSD as their primary drive- well- those who can afford anyway.
I initially wished that I could be done testing the Toshiba DT01ACA drives which are more than 500GB capacity to see how they stack up against WD and/or Seagate. Unfortunately, for now, it didn’t work out so we’ll have to do with what we have.
The first thing you’ll notice is that the drive is rated to consume 10.70 wars during read and write, whereas during idle its rated to consume 8.20 watts. It should also be noted that despite Velociraptor comes with a massive heatsink, its 0.25kg lights compared to this drive on paper. The operating temperature is as same as what velociraptor has.
Like all hard drives, there is a foam sandwiched between the drive and the PCB.
WD uses Smooth’s L7251 3.1 ver. motor controller, Marvell’s 88i9045-TFJ2 controller and Hynix H5DU5162ETR-E3C 64MB DDR Chip for the drive’s Cache buffer.
I also wanted to note that throughout the time I have reviewed hard drives, Amphenol makes stronger HDD I/O connector in comparison with Foxconn’s alternative. Not that it matters to a lot of people, just something to point out.

Although this drive is used for AS SSDs, the tests in these give a good idea of Sequential, 4K Aligned, 4K Aligned with 64Bit thread test and the Access time of the hard drive using incompressible data.
When it comes to sequential read, WD 2002FAEX is surprisingly only faster than WD 3TB EZRS drive. One would expect to be only slower than the Velociraptor but that’s the case. Access time for read also not impressive for a Caviar Black as many would expect.
Same as read- except the access time is one of the lowest in the chart.
With a transfer sizes from 0.5KB through 8192KB and a total length of 256MB, ATTO measures transfer speed throughout the drive’s storage capacity for both reads and writes.
The drive is maxed out from 16KB file size to 8MB, maintaining between 135MB write and 139MB Read minimum.
Between medium-to-large filesize, the drive is only faster than Seagate and WD’s green variant when it comes to sequential read. Ouch!!
When it comes to write speeds, it goes head-to-head with Seagate’s ST33000651AS and WD’s 3TB EFRX.
Looking at the average, the drive is only second to Velociraptor. I wish I could have seen the same results in the previous synthetic tests.
But when it comes to write speeds, it’s the quickest so far!

WD’s own 3TB EZRS is doing better than the Black counterpart. WD’s 600GB HLHX is still the lowest of all mechanical drives.
With the file size of 1000MB, CrystalDiskMark is set to random (incompressible data) and tests Sequential, 512K, 4KB without and WITH Queue Depth 64.
Looking at 512K Random, its slower only compared to both the Velociraptors.
EFRX and both the velociraptor models stay ahead of FAEX Black in the 512k random write test.
With the exception of adding music, the drive stands well just below 1TB DHTZ Velociraptor.
In Windows media centre test, the single platter Toshiba DT01ACA 500gig has an advantage, but that’s even more clear with the PCMark 7.
But when it comes to other tests, it stays on well.
The long 98.39GB assorted movie folder transfer is where the drive took about 5 minutes longer than the velociraptor.
